For example, Facebook can help you to share something with your classmates, or even, find your old friends that you knew nothing about for months, or even years.

After that, you’ll be able to start using Facebook as a full user.

What can I do in Facebook?

We’ve mentioned before that Facebook is a great social network. But there’re people who don’t know what this term means. Basically think of a huge network of persons who can share photos, videos and stuff with other persons. If you like to have friends, this is the right place for you because there’re thousands of people looking for new contacts everyday. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know all the people in real life. This is one of the great things of Facebook, and Internet. You can meet persons from all around the world and communicate with them in real time. It’s an effective and inexpensive channel of communication.

Sharing stuff in your wall

Your wall is nothing more than your personal profile page. What you write there, can be seen by your friends (or anyone, depending of your privacy settings). Friends can reply to your updates and can share stuff with you as well. You only have to write whatever you want to share and press the Post button. This is how the page looks like:

In case you want to share an image, just paste the URL of the file and Facebook will generate a thumbnail. If you want, a description can be added to the image to enrich the context of your publication. This is an affective way to share nice things you find in other websites. Your friends will be allowed to post comments of your photos, and of course, you can reply to those comments too. Note that when you share interesting things, your friends are more likely to comment or like your publications. This happens all the time.

You can share videos too. If you paste an URL of a video hosted in popular services like YouTube, you’ll note that Facebook will generate a thumbnail too. Also, a link to the original video will be inserted so when people click the title of the video, they’ll be taken to YouTube (or wherever the video is hosted). You can add a description and comments as well:

Using applications

Applications are add-ons or plugins that allow you to interact between Facebook and a third party service. For example: you can use the Twitter application for Facebook to allow Twitter to update your wall whenever you post a new tweet. Games are by far the most popular applications because you can challenge your friends in real time.

For example, if you’re playing tetris, your score will be saved as you finish a level. Your friends (they have to install the tetras application too) will be able to see your score, and depending of the game, they can even play a match with/against you. the same goes for your friends’ scores: you can see them anytime you want and measure their progress.

If you have a nice amount of friends, games like this can get pretty exciting. And as you can find games, there’re a lot of applications designed to solve a problem: quizzes, lucky-meters, famous quotes posters, etc. Given the popularity of Facebook, it’s quite easy to find apps all over the place. Just use the search box within Facebook and you’ll be able to locate them easily. Start typing the name and you’ll se a bunch of results appearing.

[Note]: These apps sometimes can request access to your private data. For example, a game would need the list of your friends in order to find who is playing the same game. You have to be extremely careful with the apps you install. If one application looks suspicious or unreliable, don’t install it. Your information is a gold mine for spammers and hackers, so think twice before proceeding to install an application. Just use your common sense.

Upload photos

One of the most used features in Facebook is the ability to upload photos. You can upload as many of them as you want, and you won’t be charged a cent. It’s free space for you to store your valuable pics. Once you’ve uploaded a photo, you can share it with your friends, and you can even tag them so they can know you’ve uploaded a photo of them.

About privacy and good use of Facebook

Yes, we know it’s cool to share things with friends. For sure you’ll find a lot of nice people, but you have to understand that eventually you’ll find disgusting persons or people who make you feel uncomfortable. It’s important to protect your personal information, just like in real life. You don’t go telling everyone where do you live, or what school you attend. The same principles apply for your online presence. Always use your common sense:

  • Do not share all your information to the public. Just share the minimum.
  • Share your personal information (where do you live, family members, etc) to your closest friends. The more you share, the most vulnerable you become.
  • Just share your photos with people you trust. Stalkers are a common thing, so be careful and watch out.
  • Never share too much: I know people who share where do they live, and they even post the locations they’re at. If I was a robber, I had too much information in my hands.
  • Never share your login details with anybody.
  • Do not use weak passwords. Don’t use obvious words or combinations (your birthday, for example).
  • Don’t use your mail/password in every site. Just because it has a Facebook logo it doesn’t mean it’s legit.
