Windows, a product of Microsoft can easily be named as the giant of the Operating Systems used in Personal Computers. Now the latest talk of the Windows users is the release and the latest new features of Windows 8. But for any user of the Ubuntu 11.10, a Linux based OS, would easily find out that many of the proposed new features of Windows 8 are already available in Ubuntu. Here is a look on the features that are similar between Windows 8 and Ubuntu 11.10.
One of the biggest changes to Windows 8 desktop is the new appearance of the start screen. While in the previous versions we had a pop-up menu called Start menu, now we would have tile based screen. But this screen is already present in Ubuntu 11.10, code-named the ‘Oneiric Ocelet’. This screen was the new feature between the previous versions of Ubuntu.
File Transfer Management
Generally when we use Windows, we could observe that multiple file transfers are a little slow. Also these multiple transfer details are displayed in separate windows. But in Windows 8 all these are about to be made into a single window. This feature is also present in the Ubuntu and other Linux versions of the OS. Of course, you can still pause the copying processing in Windows 8. But I do not think that is going to matter much.
ISO mounting and Bootable USB
Another useful option that is to be introduced is the mounting of ISO files and creating bootable Windows 8 environment using USB. But these features are already available in Ubuntu and there are many systems in which the Operating Systems boot from the USB. However Microsoft have introduced an addition to this booting my removing the USB so that they could freeze the booting temporarily.
Cloud Integration and App Store
The next feature that is to be introduced in Windows 8 is the synchronization of data with the cloud. But in Ubuntu 11 every user is allowed to store upto 5 GB data freely in the cloud. This data can be used as a backup or for any other reasons. If one requires more space he could pay $2.99 per month for an extra 20 GB. In Windows 8 this feature is to be integrated with SkyDrive and the user can store upto 25 GB. However Windows does not restrict the type of data to be stored in the cloud. Also there is a rumor that an App Store is to be introduced. But this feature is available in all Mac machines and in Ubuntu it is known as the ‘Ubuntu Software Center’. They user would find all his apps present here.
The ReFS( Resilient File System) is the new file system that is about to be introduced. But on closer observation, one could find similarities between ReFS and the ZFS( the Z File System) and the Linux-based B-tree file system. But in Windows 8 additional security is provided by introducing B+ trees and checksums. Though Microsoft could claim that they are the first to use ReFS, they cannot hide the striking similarities.
The similarities between Linux based OS and Windows 8 has kept many interested. But if one uses both Windows and Ubuntu, he can easily find out that Ubuntu is faster. Another great advantage of Ubuntu is that it is open source. However the popularity of Microsoft Windows is such that it is used by the majority of people.
